Welcome to Clarence's info info on Prairieville Louisiana Clubs, Organizations, Scouts, Churches, and Activities. |
Hi, welcome to Clarence's hobby website on Clarence's info on Prairieville Louisiana Community Clubs, Activities, churches, organizations and Resources for Ascension Parish. Prairieville is a community in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is south of Baton Rouge and north of Gonzales, Louisiana. Prairieville is an expanding bedroom suburb of Baton Rouge. Its name comes from the once plentiful pastures and prairies that were visible from Highway 73 and U.S. 61. The most notable of these was the Phillips Farm. The farmhouse is still a local landmark in Prairieville, although the original owner died in 2005. The house is lined with live oaks and a white planked fence surrounds the grounds. The pasture was sold off in 1992 at the start of the suburban development and a 250-resident subdivision, named "Seven Oaks", surrounds the farm where the pastures were. In 2006, the farmhouse was sold at auction following the death of Dr. Carey A. Phillips. The 40 acre tract of land (including the house) will be further developed for housing. In recent decades, Prairieville has benefited from high-performing public schools and low crime rate. If you have any information about Prairieville Louisiana that you would like to be included here, please email me at [email protected] I am looking for names of churches and the corresponding links. I am also interested in any community clubs, activities and business in the Prairieville area of Ascension Parish. I am also interested in any web sites for boy scouts, girl scouts, cub scouts, brownies etc. This is located at www.cajunradio.org/prairievillelouisianacommunity.html The following article is by DARLENE DENSTORFF Ascension section editor 2TheAvocate.com Published: Jan 10, 2008 PRAIRIEVILLE Gwen Dodge and Jackie Goller couldnt stop laughing as Dodge prepared to toss a pair of pink dice. The two women were joined by six other Bunco players who chatted about everything from children to shopping. While it seemed like the women were lifelong friends, in reality, they had only met once or twice before. They are part of the newly formed Prairieville Womens Club, the brainchild of founder Patti Cameron. Cameron, a native of Baton Rouge who moved to Ascension Parish five years ago, said she decided to organize the club to meet women with similar interests and just have a little fun. In addition to monthly games of Bunco, a dice game; the club hosts a scrapbook group, mom and tots playgroup and ladies night out group. Cameron got the idea for the club after belonging to a similar organization in Houston. Thanks to the club, Im constantly meeting new people, Cameron said. Getting started The PWC, as Cameron calls her creation, is an informal club which brings together longtime friends and new residents of the Prairieville area. To get the club started, Cameron dotted several Prairieville neighborhoods with fliers announcing the new idea. I had no idea what to expect, Cameron said. But, after a few days and several e-mails being passed around town, we had enough women to get started. That was in September. So many new people are moving to the area, I thought this would be a nice way for them to meet new friends, Cameron said. To date, the club has more than 30 members who take part in the various activities. A desire to have fun and develop new friendships seem to be the only requirements to join the club. Getting down to business The club has no set of formal rules and a membership meeting wont be until February. While the name refers to Prairieville, Cameron said the group welcomes women from all around Ascension Parish and even folks from South Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge resident Stacey Gregory said she was looking for a Bunco game when she came across a friend who told her about Camerons club. Gregory and seven other women met at Gwen Dodges home for a lively round of the dice game a week before Christmas. Before the Bunco game got started, Dodge and the women munched on a variety of dishes and chatted about their plans for Christmas, their children and a variety of issues. Two card tables were set up in Dodges living room complete with everything needed to play the game of Bunco, including the rule book. Bunco is a game played n teams with three dice. A winning throw in Bunco is to throw three of a kind of a specified number. Players scream Bunco when they have rolled a winning hand. The rules are simple, Dodge said. If you Bunco, you get to wear the hat. The hat Dodge referred to is a handmade creation featuring a pair of dice dangling from the brim. On this day, Cameron was the first to wear the hat. Mom and Tots Cameron said one of the first groups she started was for mothers and their children. A stay-at-home mother herself, Cameron said she realized new residents really dont know where to go with young children. Danica Tietje, who has two children ages 2 and 4-months, said the club has not only provided a place for her children to play, but a chance for her to meet other mothers. Tietje, who just moved to Prairieville from Lake Charles, said the Wednesday morning sessions are a relaxing way to have some adult conservation. During a recent Wednesday session, five mothers sat on the floor, watching as their children played with dolls, a miniature kitchen and drawing pads. The group meets at Christ Church on Tiggy Duplessis Road. The church has been great and this way the children have different toys to play with, Cameron said. Its a nice change of scenery for mother and child, Tietje said. The play group also gives the children an opportunity to learn how to share, respect others and take turns. The kids love it and the moms love it, Cameron said. There are plenty of stay-at-home moms, its just hard to find them. Getting involved Joining the groups are as easy as logging onto a Web site. Were trying to keep it very simple, Cameron said. In addition to the current offerings, Cameron would like to start a book club and garden group. The Ladies Night Out group meets on the second Thursday of each month at a different restaurant and the Bunco group meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at a different club members home. The scrapbook group meets at Memory Mania. The more women that join, the more groups we can offer, Cameron said. The clubs first organizational meet is set for Feb. 8, 2008 at Christ Church.
