January 11, Audubon State Historic Site, St. Francisville - Spanish Colonial Encampment, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The Louisiana Purchase made life interesting for the settlers and residents of the West Florida parishes, as they adapted to new political boundaries and government. January 18, Fort Jesup State Historic Site, Many - Surveying on the Frontier, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Discover the purpose and intent of former President Thomas Jefferson, in surveying the ArkLaTex region, as well as other areas of the United States. January 19-31, Marksville State Historic Site, Marksville - Bicentennial 2003, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Learn how the Louisiana Purchase brought more settlers into contact with Native American tribes and what this increased traffic between the two cultures meant for both groups. February 1-28, Lake Bistineau State Park, Doyline - The Life of Free People of Color, c. 1803-1815, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. View exhibits on the culture of free people of color living in north Louisiana during the early 1800s, and learn how they were impacted the Louisiana Purchase. February 21-22, Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site, St. Francisville - African & Caribbean Influences in Southern Antebellum Cooking, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. African and Caribbean peoples brought to the Americas as slaves contributed much to Louisiana culture, notably in the preparation of meals. March 1-31, Fort Jesup State Historic Site, Many - Who Wore What in the Louisiana Purchase, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This month-long display will explore the types of fashion worn by people of all classes in the early 1800s, including various examples of both military and civilian clothing. March 1, Lake Bistineau State Park, Doyline - Women of the Louisiana Purchase - Women's Art, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Learn about the day-to-day activities of Louisiana women during the early 1800s, such as cooking, quilting and preparing cloth for dyeing. March 8, Fort St. Jean Baptiste State Historic Site, Natchitoches - Encampment on Cane River, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Discover life in colonial Louisiana, at the oldest settlement in the Louisiana Purchase. Activities include military demonstrations, period merchant stalls, music, children's games, magic shows, historical vignettes and more. March 15, Lake Bistineau State Park, Doyline - Women of the Louisiana Purchase - Wildflower Walk, 10 a.m. The colonial "lady of the house" was responsible for the contents of the medicine cabinet, as well as the kitchen pantry. March 20-23, Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site, St. Martinville - Plantation Days, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Blacksmithing, basketweaving and soapmaking are just a few of the crafts demonstrations that visitors can enjoy during this living history program. In commemoration of the Louisiana Purchase, special exhibits will focus on the impact of the Purchase on the French peoples who settled along Bayou Teche. April 5, Fairview-Riverside State Park, Madisonville - Louisiana Purchase Folk Crafts Festival, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Come and see 200 years of folk crafts, with artisans displaying functional and decorative items made for the early 19th century household. April 30, Port Hudson State Historic Site, Zachary - Louisiana Through the Ages, 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. In order to celebrate the date of the signing of the Louisiana Purchase, Port Hudson will educate school groups about the turbulent days of the Civil War. June 7, 14, 21, 28, Poverty Point State Historic Site, Epps - North Louisiana Settlers in 1803, 10 a.m. Learn about the daily life of French settlers in the Mason Ridge area, during the early 1800s. This program will include exhibits of household items, demonstrations of everyday tasks, and discussions on the importance of hunting and trading to the settlers. June 28, Tickfaw State Park, Springfield - Louisiana Purchase Cajun Day, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Celebrate the life of the Cajun people with food, music and dance. August 15, Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site, St. Martinville - Day of the Acadians, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tour the Farmstead for a taste of Acadian life in the early 1800s, and watch the video Against the Tide - The Story of the Cajun People of Louisiana to learn how the Acadians adapted to life in south Louisiana. October 4-5, Audubon State Historic Site, St. Francisville - West Florida Rebellion, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday. Archaeological exhibits recreate life in the Spanish colonies of West Florida, from the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 until the West Florida Rebellion of 1810. October 16-18, Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site, St. Martinville - Bicentennial Attakapas Trade Days 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. See how the Louisiana Purchase affected the trade of the courier du bois or trappers, traders and hunters who moved from place to place in the early 1800s. The differences between the life of the courier du bois and that of the Acadian farmer will be highlighted during a living history encampment and demonstrations. October 24-25, Fort Jesup State Historic Site, Many - Frontier Days, 5 - 9 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday. Enjoy candlelight tours, a hayride, a children's costume contest and games on Friday evening. Come back on Saturday to see a frontier homestead, explore the differences between military and civilian life on the frontier, and view various demonstrations throughout the day.
