Baton Rouge Sci-Fi Science Fiction Convention called BabelCon will be held in Port Allen on August 4th, 2007. BabelCon 2007 August 4th, 2007 West Baton Rouge Conference Center 2750 N. Westport Dr. Port Allen, LA 70767-6112 Official BabelCon website: www.babelcon.org/ Have you ever been to a Science Fiction Convention before? If not, you should try it! We have a really good one here in Baton Rouge called the "Babel Con" Convention. It is open to the public and you are invited to attend. It is a gathering of people who are interested in Science Fiction shows such as Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Lost in Space, Rocky Horror, Star Wars, Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer, Batman, Harry Potter, The Time Tunnel, etc. It attracts a lot of gamers with a room set up for playing board games where you can participate in games such as a Warhammer Game Tournament, RPGA Network scenarios, and historic recreations. There is also open gaming for anyone that wants to play their own games. It also attracts a lot of Science Fiction authors and writers. There are a lot of guest writers and discussion groups. Another cool aspect is that videos are continuously played throughout the day in the video room. The tentative lineup is "How William Shatner Changed the World" (documentary), "Uber Goober" (documentary), "Gamers" (movie), "Batman The Movie" (original 60's classic), "Star Trek" (classic TV episode), "Lost in Space" (TV episode), "The Science of Star Trek" (documentary), to name a few. Also, it is great to see the various Sci-Fi Fan Groups attending in full costume, including several associated with Star Trek (Classic and Klingon), Stargate, and Star Wars. If you come dressed in your own costume, you get a free picture at the photo booth. Within 24 hours these photos are made available online, no purchase is necessary. In addition, there are many shows planned, such as live rocket demonstrations, The Bedlam Bards Renaissance folk music, belly dancing, a proposed historic SCA demo, a Sci-Fi & Fantasy art show, a Pirates of the Caribbean interactive show, a day-long medieval Knighting Ceremony performed by the Acadiana Medieval Faire, martial arts demonstrations, and live action role playing games. At the end of the evening The Rocky Horror Picture Show is performed by the Transylvanian Electric Company, followed by the Rockin Horror Dance Party in honor of Anne Rices Vampire Lestat Fan Club as emceed by national horror hostess, Diviana. BabelCons "media guests" are actor Robert O'Reilly, who played Klingon Chancellor Gowron on Star Trek The Next Generation & Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; actress Lee Meriwether, who played Catwoman in the original Batman movie, as well as the computer image "Losira" in a classic Star Trek episode, plus a scientist in The Time Tunnel; and Vaudeville performer Bob May, the original Lost in Space Robot. BabelCons "science guests" are Miguel Rodriguez, NASA's Director of the Operational Systems Engineering Office at the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida, discusses current and future NASA projects and goals; Dr. Robert Hynes from the LSU Department of Theoretical Physics, discusses state-of-the-science physics and beyond; Dr. Charles Gramlich from Xavier University's Department of Biological Psychology lectures on how different alien biology would produce various types of sentient species; Bill Lee, paleontology expert that volunteers at the Florida Museum of Natural History, discusses recent research, fossils, and the uncovered secrets of the ancient ages of planet Earth. BabelCon is a presentation of the Science and Engineering Education Foundation, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to Science education using Science Fiction media. At least 50% of BabelCon's shows, panel discussions, demonstrations, and other presentations are related to Science, which also includes historical education. Star One Delta, a local Sci-Fi & Science club, provides support for the Science Fiction aspect of the event. The location of "Babel Con 2007" is the West Baton Rouge Conference Center, located along the I-10 service road off Exit 151. The convention is scheduled for Saturday, August 4th.
